We
are very excited to begin recording of our newest CD this January, 2009.
The recording will be a second celebrating the music of the Christmas season and
will feature many fresh and new sounding arrangements of traditional sacred
favorites as well as some music from the folk tradition and pop tunes. We
have been very fortunate to have several arrangers step forward to help us with
this project and we'll be publishing a list with their ordering information when
we finalize the music to be included on the recording.
We have had another personnel change in 2008 with the departure of long time member and tubist Stephen Purifoy. It was a very sad occasion for us and him, but we wish him the best in his new job and city. His service and dedication to us really helped give us a lot of the successes we've enjoyed during his tenure.
This opening has been ably filled by Michael Taylor. His resume as well as his playing is very impressive and we have enjoyed working with him in the group. I hope you will take a moment to visit his personal page.
First
organized in 1978 as a brass quartet, the UBE and its members have been providing music
for area orchestras, big bands, church services, dedications, weddings and receptions,
theater productions, area club functions, and civic
functions. The ensemble's repertoire
ranges from the medieval to modern eras. Through the years, its members have performed
with many of North Carolina's symphonies as well as others across the nation, various
theater pit orchestras across North Carolina, many backup orchestras for names such as Bob
Hope, Roy Clark, The Temptations, The Four Tops, jazz great Clark Terry, local touring
rock bands, and many big bands across the state including the prestigious Jazz
Hall of Fame Unifour Jazz
Ensemble and such nationally known groups as the Guy Lombardo, Jimmy Dorsey, Les Elgart,
Art Pepper, and Charlie Spivak orchestras. In addition, several members have
conducted music for theater productions, public and private school music,
community brass ensembles, community jazz ensembles, and community bands.
Several past members have gone on to become professional performers or teaching
careers at several universities and colleges across the nation.
The Unifour Brass Ensemble Inc. is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization
dedicated to providing the public, most notably our young people, with a basic
appreciation for music through the wonderful sound of brass instruments. With art in our
culture being somewhat diminished today, we feel that we can make a difference and help to
keep the art of music and ensemble playing alive.
